Isaac Watts (1674-1748) was an English hymnwriter, theologian, and logician. He is widely considered the "father of English hymnody," as he is credited with creating the first collection of hymns written in the English language. He was born in Southampton, England, and was a nonconformist, meaning he did not conform to the doctrines of the Church of England. He was educated at the Dissenting Academy in London, where he studied theology and logic. Watts began writing hymns at a young age, and his first collection, "Hymns and Spiritual Songs," was published in 1707. This collection included many of his most famous hymns, such as "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross" and "Joy to the World."
